Injury to the Lateral Collateral Ligament usually results from a direct blow to the inner knee toward the outside  or during a sharp pivot. With an injury to the LCL, there is local discomfort along the lateral knee.

In post-physical therapy the athlete will work on quadriceps-strengthening and balancing exercises to help reduce stress and strain on the knee.

Recovery can take up to three months. Return to play depends on range of motion and strength. Athletes should progress slowly and be able to perform movements that mimic their sport before attempting full participation.
