Functional conditioning consists of exercises that incorporate balance, flexibility, stability, acceleration, and deceleration.

When there is inadequate flexibility or lack of strength a breakdown can occur which leads to decrease in performance and possible injury.

Exercises to help condition the body for functional movements must meet all four criteria:

1. Include all three planes of movement (sagittal, frontal, and transverse)
2. Condition the bodies nerves and muscles to develop muscle memory
3. Allow the body to respond to external forces such as gravity, ground reaction forces, and momentum.
4. Condition biomotor abilities (flexibility, strength, power, endurance agility, or coordination).

Conditioning movements occurring in the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes improve performance and help prevent injuries.
