Achilles tendon injuries are common in athletes playing tennis, basketball, and soccer, among other sports involving running, jumping, and pivoting movements.
People over 30 years old are more prone to this injury. As you age, the tendon receives a reduced blood supply, which can put you at risk of injury. The tendon also experiences wear and tear, thereby weakening over time. Your muscles could endure extra stress if they are not flexible or warmed up prior to intense activity.
A strained Achilles tendon usually occurs in either of two locations: the narrow part behind the ankle or in the insertion of the tendon in the heel.
The healing process for this injury can take months to and usually occurs in very active people. Athletes should avoid stretching until most of the pain is gone!
Post-physical therapy training will be tailored to meet your needs so that you can safely achieve the level of fitness and well being you desire without injuring or re-injuring yourself.
