Functional conditioning consists of exercises that incorporate balance, flexibility, stability, acceleration, and deceleration.
When there is inadequate flexibility or lack of strength a breakdown can occur which leads to decrease in performance and possible injury.
Exercises to help condition the body for functional movements must meet all four criteria:
- Include all three planes of movement (sagittal, frontal, and transverse)
- Condition the bodies nerves and muscles to develop muscle memory
- Allow the body to respond to external forces such as gravity, ground reaction forces, and momentum.
- Condition biomotor abilities (flexibility, strength, power, endurance agility, or coordination).
Conditioning movements occurring in the sagittal, frontal, and transverse planes improve performance and help prevent injuries.
